What does this parameter do?

This parameter contains the access key for the Mapbox service, which is responsible for displaying map tiles in the OpenStreetMap integration of the eTASK FM portal. Without this key, no map views can be displayed.

What is this parameter used for?

  • Map display in the building form: Displays the geographic location of buildings on an interactive map

  • Portfolio overview: Visualizes all of the company’s properties on a map with red markers

  • Location selection: Enables interactive selection of locations on the map

  • Building mapping: Graphically displays buildings and their geographic distribution

  • Map navigation: Provides map tiles for zoom and panning functions

Technical Details (for Administrators)

Format: Alphanumeric access token
Default value: leer (String.Empty)

Important notes:

  • The token is provided by the Mapbox service after registration under Sign in | Mapbox

  • Cost model: The Mapbox service is free for up to 50,000 map views per month

  • If this limit is exceeded, the service becomes subject to a fee

  • Without a valid token, a message will appear stating that the map display is unavailable and that configuration must be performed by an administrator

Interaction with other parameters:

  • MAPQUEST_APP_KEY: Required for address search and geocoding (conversion of addresses to coordinates). Both parameters must be configured for full map functionality

  • MAPBOX_MAP_ID: Defines the map design used

  • MAPBOX_STYLE: Defines the visual style of the map display

When should you change this value?

Set the value (enter the token) if:

  • You want to activate the map function in the eTASK FM portal for the first time

  • You want to use the OpenStreetMap integration to display buildings geographically

  • Users need to visualize locations on a map

  • A new access token has been issued after registering with Mapbox

  • The existing token has expired or needs to be renewed

Leave this field blank (do not set) if:

  • The map feature is not required

  • Geographic visualization of buildings is not required

  • You have decided not to use external map services

  • You want to avoid costs for the Mapbox service

Important Notes

  1. Registration required
    To obtain a valid access token, you must first register with Mapbox at www.mapbox.com/studio/signup/. Registration is free.

  2. Monitor usage costs
    The service is free only up to 50,000 map requests per month. Monitor usage in your Mapbox dashboard to avoid unexpected costs. For larger installations with many users, this limit can be reached quickly.

  3. No Maps Without a Token
    If this parameter is empty or invalid, users will see a message stating that the map feature is unavailable because the configuration is incomplete. They will be prompted to contact their administrator.

  4. Full configuration required
    For full map functionality, you need both MAPBOX_ACCESS_TOKEN and MAPQUEST_APP_KEY. Without both parameters, neither the map display nor the address search will work correctly.

  5. Token security:
    Treat the access token as confidential and do not share it publicly. In the Mapbox dashboard, you can revoke and regenerate tokens as needed.

Security

Does changing this parameter affect security?

Yes, configuring this parameter has minor but relevant security implications.

Positive aspects:

  • The token is project-specific and can be easily revoked and replaced if compromised

  • Mapbox provides mechanisms for usage control and limitation

  • The map data itself is publicly available (OpenStreetMap), so no sensitive data is transmitted via the service

Note:

  • The access token should not be stored or shared in publicly accessible areas

  • If misused, a compromised token could result in unwanted costs if the free usage limit is exceeded

  • Using external services means that location data (coordinates) is transmitted to Mapbox

  • Verify whether the use of the Mapbox service is compatible with your privacy policy

Data protection assessment:

  • When using the service, geodata and possibly IP addresses are transmitted to the Mapbox service

  • If applicable, inform your users about the use of external map services

  • Review Mapbox’s privacy policy for GDPR compliance

Recommendation: Treat the access token confidentially, monitor usage statistics regularly in your Mapbox dashboard, and review the data protection aspects before activation.

Practical example

Initial situation: A facility management team wants to use the map feature in the eTASK FM portal to visualize their 45 buildings geographically. Currently, the map feature is not activated, and when the building map is accessed, a message appears indicating that the configuration is incomplete.

Configuration: The administrator registers with Mapbox (www.mapbox.com/studio/signup/), receives an access token, and enters it into the system configuration:

  1. Parameter: MAPBOX_ACCESS_TOKEN

  2. Value: pk.eyJ1IjoibXlj0123pYW5Bj0iOiJja2llYXEybWUwMnZ5MnVxa3F1bGptMDlpIn0.7ixV94v8Rc42bmvEjY7kaA

Additionally, the MAPQUEST_APP_KEY is configured to enable address search.

After the change:

  • An interactive map showing the geographic location appears in the building form

  • In the portfolio overview, all 45 buildings are displayed with red markers on the map

  • Users can zoom in and out, move around, and select locations on the map

  • Address entry works with automatic coordinate search

  • The team now has a better geographical overview of its real estate portfolio

Result: The map feature is fully operational. The team uses the visualization for planning, presentations, and spatial analyses. Monthly usage is approximately 12,000 map views, remaining well below the free limit of 50,000 views.
